Den Leader Resources
Thank you for volunteering to be a Den Leader. This Quick Start walks you through everything you need to get going, step by step. You do not need to know it all up front. Work through it in order and reach out anytime at cubmaster@pack169md.org.
Step 1: Register
Register through BeAScout so you are an official, background-checked leader.
- Go to BeAScout and search for packs near ZIP 21770, or use the Pack 169 application link:
- Click Apply Now, then Adult Volunteers, then Start.
- Use the same login for Scoutbook and training. Keep it handy.
- If a fee is charged, save the receipt and email it to treasurer@pack169md.org for reimbursement.
Step 2: Youth Safety Training
(Formerly Youth Protection Training.)
- Log in at my.scouting.org with your application login.
- Click the image for Safeguarding Youth Training and complete the online module.
This is a joining requirement. Finish it before your first den meeting, and renew it every year so your registration stays active.
Step 3: Reach Out to Your Den
- You will receive contact info for your den families.
- Reach out by text, email, or phone, always keeping the parent or guardian in the loop.
- Follow Safeguarding Youth guidelines in all communications.
Step 4: Plan First Meeting
- Choose a location (home, school, church, library, or similar).
- Work with families to pick a time that fits most schedules.
- Two meetings per month is typical, but each den can adjust.
- Keep pack meetings in mind when you schedule. The pack meets monthly during the school year. See the Pack Calendar.
Step 5: Den Leader Training
Log in at my.scouting.org and start with the module “Before the First Meeting.”
Step 6: Prepare the Meeting
- Use the official Cub Scout Den Leader Resources.
- Plan a simple, fun first meeting. It does not need to be elaborate.
Step 7: First Den Meeting
Run your meeting, have fun, and schedule the next one before everyone leaves.

Remember: we are all volunteers, and no one is an expert. Do not be scared to ask questions, try new things, step out of your comfort zone, and have fun. Most importantly, we are trying to keep the kids safe, help them learn, and enjoy the experience.
